Swept Hilt Dagger

by Calvin
(Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)

All pictures and descriptions I've seen of this dagger lead one to believe that it is a battle-ready rennaissance style maine gauche. What I received, however, is something totally different.

The blade is just over an inch shorter than described and about 3/4 of an inch wider than it should be (if the proportions in every picture I've seen of it are accurate). It is more like a big, medieval dagger. There is no distal taper whatsoever, so the blade is very wide, thick and heavy. The wire wrapping on the grip isn't very even and seems to be wrapped around some sort of glue. Speaking of glue, it seems they've used a lot of it to put this thing together.

I can see it between the guard and grip and the grip and pommel, and haven't been able to wrench the hilt apart to take a look at the tang. Won't really want to use this thing on stage or in practice until I can do that and I'm not sure I should use this stiff blade at all. The scabbard is also a little cheap looking and doesn't fit the blade as well as it should. Unless things change drastically with this company, I don't think I'll be spending my dollars on it again.

I don't blame you

They are quite often in the 'cheap and nasty' category. I don't really have a problem with a sword maker using glue or epoxy (even Albion epoxies their handles) as long as it is done neatly...

But yeah, this blade doesn't sound all that grand - and pretty irritating that the pics don't match the final product? Where did you buy it from? Did you chase it up with the seller at all?
