Practical katana(PK)

by Sal
(United States)

Well, I do not own this particular blade, but as a sword enthusiast, I have gathered together many stories so I can contribute something. Shall we begin?

At a glance, the Practical katana (which shall be referred to as PK from here on,or simply sword) is a nice sword for a good price, and has started out many katana enthusiasts and iai practitioners for years now. Even the Paul Chen of Cheness started out with this sword. Now, problems with this sword are pretty straight forward and seen on a LOT of sword nowadays.

Some people think that the blade being epoxied into the handle is a bad thing, while others find it more secure, giving them a better feeling when cutting, knowing that the blade will not fly out of the tsuka and maim someone. I have heard stories of them cutting through garbage cans by accident when a cut was missed,(about 3 people I know experienced this) another story I have heard is the sword being bent 30 degrees and returning to center.

The PK is known for a wickedly sharp blade, and it being able to sheer paper proves that for sure :D. But it chipping on harder targets is also common, especially on the new practical elite katana, which has a more prominent hamon and a nicer polish, and being able to unmount it is a nice feature as well. I have also heard of Ito(wrapping on handle) coming loose after use as well, and on saya(sheathe). All and all, I hear that the sword is great, especially being able to pick them up on ebay for no more than US$150-$200, if you know where to look that is :)

They are all and all a pretty nice steal for the beginning swordsman, or backyard samurai,(:D) and without the danger of it flying out of the tsuka.

So, go have fun, I really truly hope this helped at least one of you guys out :-)

Great Sowrd
by: Anonymous

I got one for Christmas a few years back and love it. One day me and a few friends were cutting water bottles on top of a cement block and my friend missed and cut a pretty good size chunk out of the bolck. The Sword was only a little chipped which still annoys me but overall an awesome sword.

MY PK RULES!!!
by: Anonymous

I thought that it wasn't a very marketable sword, ironically enough, when you mentioned the garbage can thing, I went out to cut, and I butchered my garbage can....! Must be some sort of bad mojo surrounding the Practical katana.....:)

konnichiwa!

I do not know if my greeting was spelled correctly, but who cares? I am usually into European swords, but After taking a look at this page and sword buyers.com, I saw that Japanese style blades are just as beautiful as a well made Valkyrie sword any day ^_^

Also, is that how it is spelled? Whatever xD

Sorry, you probably know who I am, but I will leave you to guess that :)

So yeah, thanks for the post, it's great, I have a wakizashi from another company, and a friend assured me that the PK was better.

I will go and get it now, thanks.

PS, I am sorry, but you are gonna have to guess who I am.....XD

Thank you!
by: Ryan

Hi, I am Ryan, and I do not own a Japanese long sword yet, I only have a Chinese sword, which is nice, don't get me wrong, but I have had trouble trying to find a good katana in a good price range, then a friend of mine linked me here, so thank you.

Practical katana
by: Diane

Wow, I thought that they were better than that, So, what would any of you guys recommend as a starter sword?

It looks like a good sword, but I think I want a through hardened as my first REAL sword.

An industry classic
by: Paul Southren

Yes indeed Sal, the PK are kind of an industry standard against which all other Katana in the same price range can be compared to. Some do a lot better, others a lot worse, but there is no doubting that they are a classic.

Their new elite series PK are even better, definitely worth a good look.
