A relative newcomer, Musashi Swords are rapidly becoming one of the most reliable and high quality providers of budget Japanese swords and blades.

Chris Zhou
Sword Artisan Chris Zhou

Re-branding the work of several Chinese forges (including, notably, the forge of acclaimed Chinese sword smith Chris Zhou, pictured right) - Musashi swords have been a regular at many trade shows, but have only recently established an internet presence, care of their official US distributor - Roger Caneda (who is also the owner of the Dragons Cavern - a very popular and reliable online seller of high quality fantasy display swords).

Despite the fact that they are made at several different forges, Musashi swords are generally quite consistently good quality - especially considering the extremely low price tags. As such they produce a range of extremely affordable light duty cutters/display swords all the way up to some real no frills workhorses - all branded with a distinctive double 'C' Ring Tsuba image either on the blade or on the habaki (blade collar).

The price range on Musashi swords ranges for US$59.99 to $379.99 - though few above the $200 mark.

It should also be noted that as the manufacturer/re-brander only uses SKUs - the names of each individual sword may well vary from retailer to retailer - despite the fact that the product is the same.

MAIN PRODUCT LINES

$50 to $149 Swords

The vast majority of Musashi swords fall within this broad price based category, which also encompasses their range of affordable Japanese Tanto (Japanese daggers).

Arguably the best in this group are the Charcoal Black Tsuba line for their excellent blade geometries and the Tokusen IIBR, for the same geometry plus some other nice touches such as real same rayskin, tight wraps, and lots of ‘bling'.

$150 to $249 Swords

All of the swords within this category are made at the Forge of the legendary Chinese artisan Chris Zhou, and are effectively semi-custom swords made by some of his senior smiths that have been commissioned by Musashi swords directly - hence the low price.

These swords are head and shoulders above the lower priced blades offered by Musashi swords and have an attention to detail rarely seen in this price range.

$250+ Swords

Most of the swords in the US$250 price range and up are in closeout - primarily due to the fact that the swords made by Chris Zhou are simply better quality than the forges making their more expensive laminated and folded Katana.

However, there is one sword in particular that is proving extremely popular - and that is the massive 47.5" blade of their Nodachi Katana.

KNOWN ISSUES

Most of the known issues have to do with Quality control issues involved with the $50 to $149 range of swords and Tanto. Not all of the blades in this category are of consistently good quality - which is largely to be expected considering the extremely low production costs and the sheer volume of swords being produced....

Due to this issue, it is highly recommended to either buy direct from the official distributor or from a reseller with a proven track record of excellent customer service.

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY: The editor notes that one case that came to his attention was for a Katana bought via Trueswords.com. Not only did Trueswords arrange a replacement, but they also shipped it out BEFORE the defective sword was returned along with a UPS shipping docket so that the customer could return the sword without having to be out of pocket even for a minute. Which is well above and beyond the call of duty...

NOTES: Definitely the best independent Musashi Swords seller, not only are their prices incredibly low (sometimes lower than the official distributor) but their customer service is exceptional. Highly recommended.

Swords of Might
NOTES: Another excellent supplier with a decent range of their swords and good prices.

Twiggys Treasures
FACE: Sells some of their $2000 Katana that no-one else does. Some customer concerns with their level of service however...
