horror story

About 8-9 years ago I got my hands on a m.r.l. catalog.

Being a noob at sword buying I jumped for joy.
Little did I know I would later want to rip my hair out. First I spent about $450 on a sword and display stand (cold-cast poly crap loin's head plaque).

They discontinued my sword after I payed. Forceing me to chose another. The sword choose was the viking sword with brass hilt and pomel(no longer available). This sword was some bit cheaper than what I paid, so for a week I get the run-around for the diffrence and then a check for not 10% of what was due.

My torment did not stop yet! The sword did not fit the stand. The stand fell apart out of the box(the loin's fangs fell off.). The horror goes on latter while play with said sword the tang snaps blade becomes a projectile causeing a great deal of damage to my wall.

I do not like museum replicas limited or atlanta cutlery. Poor poor customer service and low quality....

I was a customer over 10 years ago

And I thought they were good? They even personally snail-mailed me answers to some questions I had about a potential purchase.

The sword I bought from MRL was a non-historical hand-and-a-half-sword found in the "fantasy" section of their catalog. It's only "fantasy" because it's not based on any one sword. But it's a beautiful sword, with brass guard and pommel, from Windlass Steelcrafts. It's one of their cheaper swords, but so what.

If MRL are better now than they were back then, they should be a good company to deal with. They were courteous and extremely helpful with me back when I was beginning my meager collection.

8-9 years ago is a bit too long to judge....

8-9 years ago, they were REALLY poor.

However it is not good to hold a company based on your experiences 8-9 years ago. I own 2 of their swords, both were released several years ago (maybe 3-4 years?) and they are of exceptional quality.

MRL was widely known to be a very poor company in the past. Many people still believe it is, however almost none of these people have had any experience with the modern MRL. I strongly recommend that you base your opinion upon their recent offerings - it's common knowledge that they missed the mark a long time ago, but it is apparent that they've found it now. Their newest swords even sometimes lack that steryotypical 'whippiness" and it's been reported that the quality of hilt manufacture has increased drastically to the point where they can be considered to almost have the same strength as their historical counterparts. Obviously, you get what you pay for at this lower end market, so nothing will ever be perfect (DS, MRL, Gen2, and others all have negatives and positives). But MRL is quite a bit better than it was in the past. I ask that you give them another shot - get one of these more modern swords.
