Armed and Hammered!

Armed and Hammered!

It seems to me as though an awful lot of people are becoming instant Samurai "Masters" through the purchase of a <$100 katana-like-object. While it may only serve to prove that I may not be very bright, I cannot fathom the fascination with the Japanese sword arts. For anyone seriously interested in becoming an actual (as contrasted with 'false' or 'imaginary') swordsperson, I'd like to offer the following unsolicited advice:

1. Order instructional books and/or videos from a reputable source like American Fencers' Supply;

2. If there is a fencing club or school nearby, JOIN it;

3. Start with the foil and learn the rules of right-of-way;

4. after not less than six months, move to epee and go a little wild, then;

5. graduate to the saber.

IF, after having become at least somewhat proficient in following the rules (if not in the actual use) of the above mentioned weapons, one still retains an inexplicable fascination with turning Japanese, start all over by buying instructional books and videos on Japanese fencing, then (under expert tutelage ONLY):

6. begin with shinai for at least six months;

7. move on to bo-ken for at least six months;

8. TRY to find an instructor who knows what they're doing (Good Luck!).

NOTE: if your instructor teaches you to "twirl" your weapon, or otherwise relinquish control of it even momentarily - RUN AWAY!!!!
