Ancient Swords

The Ancient Swords of the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and other ancient cultures are relatively few in number compared to most other categories, though most of the major manufacturers make at least one.

Deepeeka Sword Surprisingly, Deepeeka of India make the largest variety. Their swords are also some of the most inexpensive and authentic, well regarded by re-enactors (some of whom have had a direct input in creating their designs). Quality is a bit hit and miss however, as can largely be expected for swords under the US$100 price point – and they are certainly not considered to be particularly robust.

Generation 2 make some of the most robust replicas, with a selection of Gladius, Falcata, Celtic blades etc. These swords, however, are considered to be extremely contemporary in design and give little more than lip service to authenticity – though are well received as very practical swords for the wider sword market of enthusiasts more concerned with performance than historical accuracy. Price range approx $160 to $200. Kris Cutlery also make ancient swords that are similar to Generation 2, though the way they are made make them considerably less durable.

Windlass Steelcrafts make some durable replica ancient swords, that are somewhere between Gen 2 in regards to toughness and Deepeeka in terms of their authenticity. While there are numerous glaring historical accuracies, the quality of the steel in their blades and the tempering overall is much better than Deepeeka. Price range for these ancient swords is between $150 to $200.

Valiant Armoury makes one called the Praetorian (pictured below) that you could say is somewhere between the Gen2 and Windlass in terms of historical accuracy, but at around the US$175 price point is one of the most attractive and good all round pieces.

However, the honor of the most accurate (and expensive) ancient swords by far are those made by Albion. They are quite simple looking pieces, but then again so were many of the originals. When compared to their medieval line, it is hard to say if they are worth the $666 price tags, but they are definitely the closest you will come to real ancient swords in the production sword market.

CONCLUSION

As far as Historical accuracy goes, it is very interesting how that the most true to form swords are to be found at either end of the price spectrum – Deepeeka and Albion Swords, and while many of the others are quite contemporary – many are very good interpretative designs in their own right...
